The year 2026 marked a major milestone in the Christian story of Tonga: the commemoration of 200 years of Christianity. For the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, the bicentenary was an occasion for thanksgiving and remembrance, but it also invited the Church to consider the responsibilities of carrying Christian faith into a new century.

Remembering with Thanksgiving

The bicentenary provided an opportunity to remember generations who received, proclaimed and sustained the Christian faith in Tonga. The Church’s annual programme incorporated bicentenary activities across many areas of its life. Christian education, youth programmes, educational institutions, evangelism, music and Church communications all contributed to the commemoration. Rather than belonging only to one department or one celebration, the bicentenary became a theme running through the life of the wider Church.

Young People and the Future

The bicentenary was also intentionally connected with younger generations. A major youth gathering planned for June 2026 included participants from Tonga and overseas communities, including Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia and the United States/Hawaiʻi. Christian education materials and youth programmes were also developed as part of the wider spiritual preparation for the celebration. This emphasis recognised that remembering the past has meaning only when faith continues to be received and lived by new generations.

A Church Singing Together

Sacred music became another major expression of bicentenary thanksgiving. Choirs representing regions throughout Tonga and overseas FWCT communities prepared a programme spanning different periods of Christian musical tradition. The programme culminated in music celebrating two centuries of Christian faith in Tonga.

Preserving the Story

The bicentenary also encouraged renewed attention to history. Work began on strengthening the Church’s historical timeline and digitising archival materials so that records of the Christian journey can be preserved for future generations.

Looking Towards the Third Century

The bicentenary therefore looks in two directions. It looks backwards with gratitude towards those who carried the faith through the first two centuries. At the same time, it looks forward to the responsibilities of the generations who will shape the third century of Christian witness. For the FWCT, the commemoration is ultimately more than an anniversary. It is an invitation to renew faith, discipleship and service—giving thanks for the past while entrusting the future of the Church to God.
