Equipping Ministers & Stewards

God and Tonga | Gospel & Culture

The calling to Christian ministry requires continuing learning, spiritual formation and responsible pastoral leadership. For this reason, the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga provides ongoing development for its ministers and Setuata (Conference Stewards). Formation does not end when a minister completes theological education or receives an appointment. Ministry continually encounters new pastoral, social, organisational and spiritual challenges. The FWCT therefore seeks to provide opportunities through which those entrusted with leadership can continue to develop their knowledge and practice.

Continuing Ministerial Learning

One of the initiatives reported during 2025–2026 was a fortnightly learning programme for ministers and Conference Stewards. The programme was designed to increase knowledge and strengthen practical capabilities for ministry. Training included workshops conducted in partnership with the Church’s Human Resources Department, helping ministers understand administrative processes and HR responsibilities connected with their appointments and pastoral work. The programme was extended to Vavaʻu, with the intention of reaching other island regions and larger districts of Tongatapu. This reflects the breadth of contemporary ministry. Ministers require theological and pastoral knowledge, but they also carry responsibility for people, organisations and processes that need to be managed carefully and fairly.

Reflecting on Pastoral Ministry

The Church also uses quarterly reporting to help ministers review their work. These reports provide an opportunity to identify areas of progress as well as areas that require additional attention. Importantly, the Annual Report connects this process with strengthening tauhi kakai (pastoral care). The purpose is therefore not simply administrative compliance but reflection upon how effectively congregations and people are being cared for.

Strengthening Those Who Serve

Those in ordained and appointed ministry frequently carry significant spiritual and pastoral responsibilities. Continuing formation provides space for learning, reflection and mutual encouragement. It also acknowledges that good pastoral leadership develops over time. Experience must be accompanied by openness to learning, changing circumstances and the needs of people. For the FWCT, equipping ministers and stewards is ultimately an investment in the life of the whole Church. Stronger pastoral leadership can contribute to healthier congregations, more responsible administration and deeper relationships between ministers and the people they serve. Through continuing education and spiritual formation, the Church seeks to support leaders who remain faithful to their calling while responding wisely to the changing contexts in which ministry takes place.
