Faith in Service to the Community

The outreach ministry of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (FWCT) reflects the Church’s commitment to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ not only through preaching and worship, but also through compassionate service, pastoral care and practical support. Through its ministers, departments, congregations and volunteers, the Church seeks to be present wherever people are experiencing spiritual, social or practical need.

At the heart of FWCT Outreach is a ministry of presence and relationship. Ministers and Church workers regularly visit patients and staff at Vaiola Hospital, people in prison and police custody, families in their homes, and communities throughout Tonga. Public evangelistic ministry is also carried out through initiatives such as the regular preaching programme at “Jesus Corner”, alongside Bible studies, spiritual formation programmes and community visitation.

Caring for People and Families

FWCT Outreach recognises that Christian ministry includes responding to the practical realities people face. The Church provides pastoral and material assistance to families experiencing hardship, including the distribution of food and other support. Importantly, this assistance is not restricted to members of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, reflecting a commitment to serve people according to need and to express Christian love within the wider community.

The Church also undertakes ministry among people who may be especially vulnerable or isolated. This includes ongoing ministry at Huʻatolitoli, where worship, preaching and spiritual formation are provided, as well as programmes supporting women within the facility. Through the FWCT Women’s Department, congregations also participate in regular visits and support for the residents of Alonga, hospital visitation, and care for people who are vulnerable or experiencing hardship. The Department further provides workshops and training in areas such as sewing, cooking and other practical skills that contribute to personal, family and community development.

Reaching Communities

Outreach also takes the Church beyond its buildings. Ministers, theological students, Church workers and members visit villages and homes, sharing the Christian message, offering encouragement and strengthening relationships with families and communities. The Church’s annual report describes this ministry as one marked by hospitality, mutual support and Christian fellowship between those who visit and the communities who receive them. Christian education and spiritual formation are also important dimensions of this ministry. Through Sunday School, youth programmes, Bible teaching, camps, leadership development and resources for new believers, the FWCT seeks to nurture people throughout different stages of life and faith.

Serving Beyond the Church

For the FWCT, outreach is an expression of the belief that the Church is called to serve beyond itself. It brings together evangelism, pastoral care, compassion, education, practical assistance and community participation. Whether beside a hospital bed, within a prison, in a family home, at a community gathering, or alongside a family facing hardship, the purpose remains the same: to make the love of God visible through both word and action. Through these ministries, the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga continues its calling to share the Gospel while walking alongside individuals, families and communities with faith, compassion and service.
