The mission of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (FWCT) is grounded in the call of Jesus Christ to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples and serve people with compassion. Evangelism within the FWCT therefore extends beyond preaching from the pulpit. It includes meeting people where they are, nurturing those who are growing in faith, visiting homes and communities, and bringing Christian ministry into places where people may experience hardship, isolation or particular need.

The Church’s Evangelism Department coordinates a range of ministries designed to strengthen Christian faith and extend the witness of the Church into the wider community. These include evangelistic preaching, Bible studies, spiritual camps, village and home visitation, hospital ministry, prison ministry and programmes for people who have recently committed or recommitted their lives to Christian faith.

Going Beyond the Church Building

An important feature of FWCT evangelism is its movement beyond the physical church. Ministers, Church workers, theological students and members regularly visit villages and homes, sharing Scripture, prayer and Christian encouragement with families and communities. The Annual Report describes these visits not simply as occasions for preaching, but also as opportunities for fellowship and relationship. Communities often receive visiting ministry teams with hospitality, creating a reciprocal experience of Christian generosity and connection. Public evangelistic preaching is also carried out at “Jesus Corner”, where ministers, congregations and youth groups participate in sharing the Christian message. Such activities provide opportunities for Church members, including young people, to participate actively in mission rather than understanding evangelism as the work of ordained ministers alone.

Nurturing Faith

The FWCT recognises that responding to the Gospel is the beginning of a journey rather than its conclusion. Programmes have therefore been developed to nurture new believers and people renewing their Christian commitment. An eight-week discipleship resource supports ministers and congregations in accompanying people during the early stages of their Christian formation. The intention is to provide spiritual support, biblical teaching and continuing fellowship rather than leaving new believers to continue their journey alone.

Mission Through Compassion

Evangelism is also expressed through compassionate presence. Ministers regularly visit Vaiola Hospital, correctional facilities and police cells, while ministry continues at Huʻatolitoli through worship, preaching and spiritual formation. The Church also visits families experiencing hardship and provides practical assistance, including food support. Significantly, this ministry is not restricted to FWCT families but extends to people in the wider community according to need.

A Gospel Carried Beyond Tonga

The missionary vision of the Church also extends internationally. The Annual Report recognises Tongans carrying the Gospel in communities throughout the Pacific and in countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and North America. Whether through preaching, pastoral visitation, practical care or quiet accompaniment, FWCT evangelism seeks to make the Gospel visible in both word and action.
