Christian education has an important place in the life of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. It helps children, young people and adults grow in their understanding of Scripture, the Wesleyan tradition and Christian discipleship. Through the Potungāue Ako Faka-Kalisitiane (Christian Education Department), the FWCT develops learning programmes and resources for congregations throughout the Church. The Department works closely with Sunday Schools, youth ministries, lay preachers and local Church leaders to strengthen Christian formation across generations.

Nurturing Faith from Childhood

Sunday School remains one of the important foundations of Christian education within the FWCT. It provides children with opportunities to learn Scripture, participate in worship and grow within the fellowship of the Church. The Department develops and revises Sunday School curricula, conducts examinations and visits Sunday School programmes across different Church districts. It also provides learning opportunities for Sunday School superintendents and leaders so that those responsible for teaching children are themselves supported and equipped for their ministry. Christian education is therefore understood as a shared responsibility. Teachers, ministers, parents and congregations all contribute to creating environments in which children can encounter the Christian story and learn what it means to live faithfully.

Scripture for Daily Life

The Church also encourages regular engagement with Scripture beyond Sunday services. Youth devotional resources have been prepared with daily Bible readings, while other Christian education materials support personal devotion, group learning and congregational formation. Through these resources, biblical learning becomes part of daily Christian life rather than something confined to formal worship.

Developing Christian Leaders

The Department also supports the training and certification of Malanga Hoko (lay preachers). This reflects the important place of lay participation in the life of the Church and the responsibility placed upon those who preach and teach Scripture. Youth leaders and Sunday School leaders also receive opportunities for training and fellowship. This strengthens local ministry while helping maintain common standards of teaching and Christian formation across FWCT congregations.

Wesleyan Faith and Worship

Christian education also involves preserving and interpreting the theological heritage of the Church. The Department has undertaken work associated with sermons of John Wesley, worship resources and liturgical materials. These initiatives connect contemporary congregations with the Wesleyan tradition while helping the Church communicate that tradition meaningfully to new generations. Through Sunday School, Bible study, discipleship resources, leadership development and theological formation, the FWCT seeks not merely to pass on information about Christianity, but to nurture people whose faith shapes the way they worship, serve and live.
