Women have long contributed significantly to the spiritual, pastoral and communal life of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. Through the Potungāue ʻa Fafine (Women’s Department), women participate in worship, Christian formation, community service, practical education and ministries of care. The work of the Department reflects an understanding that Christian ministry embraces the whole of life. Spiritual formation, family wellbeing, practical skills and compassionate service are therefore woven together.
Growing in Faith
The Women’s Department produces devotional and Bible-study resources that can be used personally, within families, through Kalasi ʻAho and in Church gatherings. It also organises spiritual retreats and other opportunities for women to renew their faith and strengthen their fellowship with one another. Particular attention is also given to the spouses of ministers, recognising their important contribution to the spiritual and communal life of congregations.
Serving People with Compassion
The ministry of women extends beyond Church gatherings into places of particular need. During the 2025–2026 Conference year, the Department continued ministry among women at Huʻatolitoli, with local congregations participating in regular visits. Women were also involved in ongoing care and visits to Alonga and in ministry at Vaiola Hospital. These activities demonstrate a ministry of presence: visiting, listening, encouraging and caring for people who may be facing illness, isolation or difficult circumstances. The Department also supports people experiencing hardship within congregations and communities.
Practical Learning and Development
The Women’s Department also provides opportunities for learning practical skills. Facilities available for its programmes include sewing machines, cooking equipment and spaces for workshops and training. Programmes have included sewing, cooking and other practical learning opportunities. Training related to healthy food preparation and responsible use of materials has also been incorporated into major Church preparations, encouraging approaches that are manageable, healthy and environmentally responsible. Further initiatives identified by the Department include training associated with fruit-tree cultivation and continued practical workshops.
Faith Expressed Through Service
The ministry of FWCT women demonstrates that service to God can take many forms: prayer and worship, teaching and hospitality, visiting those who are vulnerable, strengthening families and developing practical skills that can benefit households and communities. Through these ministries, women continue to contribute substantially to the mission of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga and to the wellbeing of the communities in which the Church serves.
